You might not recognize downtown if you haven’t visited lately. Last year, the city’s new Evergy Plaza opened with a 50-foot concert stage, a splash pad, choreographed fountains, a fire pit, and a 30-foot-tall digital screen. The city has also recently revamped its streets and sidewalks and welcomed The Pennant and the Iron Rail Brewery, two new additions to the host of restaurants that give this community its reputation for great food. Yes, they have all the standard national chains, but its residents are wild about their local favorites.
This community stays active year-round. One family favorite is Gage Park, which includes the Zoo, the Blaisdell Family Aquatic Center, and the Helen Hocker Theater, as well as a mini-train, carousel, and dog park. The North Arts District hosts the Artsconnect First Friday Artwalk, which typically draws over three thousand people each month. Washburn University provides an ongoing lineup of athletics, music, plays, and lectures.
Hiking and biking trails are plentiful in this community, and the most beautiful among them is perhaps the Lake Shawnee Trail. But don’t stop with just a walk. Lake Shawnee is also a top tourist destination for its golf, boating, fishing, and camping.
This thriving city is excited to be the new location of the recently renamed Heartland Stampede, an annual outdoor country music and camping festival that draws musicians such as Jason Aldean, Old Dominion, and Jake Owens. The city’s other popular festivals include the Huff ‘n Puff hot-air balloon rally and Fiesta Mexicana, a week-long celebration of Mexican culture featuring food, music, crafts, and carnival rides.
This family-friendly community is close enough to Kansas City that you can drive over in the afternoon for dinner and a concert and then return home to sleep in your own bed. How does it feel to return home to lighter traffic, great schools, and a lower cost of living? It feels golden. It’s easy to relax in this beautiful location!!
